AVAS VIEWPOINT

The Avas lighthouse tower was built in 1963 based on the designs of Miklós Hófer and Gyurgy Vórós, and is one of the most famous landmarks of Miskolc. Wooden structures, such as the Rákóczi lighthouse, had already stood on the site of the lighthouse.

The first, fire-fighting The construction of a watchtower, which would function as a watchtower, was decided by the Borsodi Bükk Egylet in 1901. However, even in 1906, when Rákóczi's ashes were being transported to Košice, only a temporary watchtower could be erected. The tower was completed in 1934 based on the plans of the city's chief architect Bálint Szeghalmy. In 1943, it suffered serious, but repairable, damage in a fire. In December 1953, however, it burned down to such an extent that for years only its spiral staircase was visible.

The current Avasi lookout was given in 1963, and since then only minor renovations have been carried out on it, most recently in 2010, including accident prevention and climate protection works. As a result, you can visit it again freely, and from its terrace you can also enjoy the beauties of Miskolc.

The 72-meter-high TV tower offers a more than 180-degree view of Miskolc.

The tower has a slightly scary feature: its maximum tilt is 45 cm!
