Basilica

The Basilica of Eger is the second largest church in our country. It was built by Patriarch László Jásnos Pyrker, based on the plans of József Hild, in the classicist style. It is one of the most beautiful Hungarian representatives of this style of masterwork.

Built: 1831-36.
Consecrated: May 5-6, 1837.
Patron saints: Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist and Saint Michael the Archangel.

The building has three naves, which are intersected in the middle by a transept, intersecting with the large dome. The crypt is located under the transept.
The apse - the sanctuary - is at the western end of the nave, opposite the main entrance. The image of the high altar depicts Saint John.
The sanctuary is surrounded by a papal throne, high priestly and canonical chairs. In front is the altar for the mass, on the left side is the choir, and on the right side is the small organ. The main organ, with the choir, is also located in the main nave, above the main entrance.
The south aisle It is closed by the altar of St. Michael, while on the north side the Chapel of St. Mary of the Cross, closed by a wrought-iron gate, can be found.
The imposing exterior of the basilica is enhanced by its location. It forms a common space with the Lyceum opposite, on the same axis, emphasizing a common spirituality.
The main entrance is reached by a wide, two-flight staircase, under a tympanum supported by Corinthian columns. Here you can find the address for the entrance, Come, let us worship the Lord: venite adoremus dominum.
