Flóris Rómer Museum of Art and History

The Rómer Flóris Museum of Art and History was founded in 1859 at the initiative of its current name, when the former Benedictine High School in Győr, established by Rómer, was elevated to museum status by the relevant imperial and royal commission, making it the country's earliest foundation. Rural Museum. In 1949, the Benedictine Museum was nationalized and merged with the city museum that existed at the time. The new institution, named after John Xanthos, located in the main square of the city, in the Apatúr House, was the center of the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Museums Directorate from 1963 to 2012. In 2013, the various fine art thematic collections were merged with the City Museum of Art, and since then it has been operating as a county-level city museum with 11 branches.

VASTUSKÓS HÁZ – PATKÓ; IMRE COLLECTION

The “Vastuskós-ház”, built in the 17th century, houses the Patkós Museum. Imre (1922-83) is a contemporary artist and curator of a rich collection of fine arts, which includes works by Hungarian artists living abroad and significant Western European artists, including Lajos Kassák, Endre Bálint, Vasarely, Béla Kondor, Csaba Vilmos Perlrott, Béla Czóbel, Lajos Gulácy, Gyula Derkovits, and István Dési Huber.

The Far Eastern collection includes, among others, an 18th century Tibetan prayer wheel, a prayer wheel, Vietnamese woodcuts, fans, Chinese ink paintings, and Persian oil lamps dating back to the Thousand and One Worlds.

The folk collection is made up of African art memorabilia. The objects are primarily from the heritage of the peoples of West Sudan, the Atlantic Coast, Nigeria, Cameroon and Congo. The clay figurines of the Falasha, a Jewish people living in Ethiopia, represent different meanings. The art of the Aboriginal people of Australia is divided into four distinct styles. It is decorated with a fresco.

The main value of the PéCzy Péter collection, which was assembled with excellent taste, is the extraordinary richness of type and form, dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Western European and Hungarian furniture, including dining and wardrobes, travel cases, writing and console tables, and a series of armchairs and armchairs with different upholstery. The collection is remarkable. It also contains works of art, including the Great Holy Family by French master Sebastien Bourdon, a martyrdom scene by Italian artist Gregorio Guglielmi, a wooden sculpture group of Jesus praying dating back to around 1500, and an unknown 17th-century painting. The 19th-century German master carved a relief entitled The Vision of Solomon.

Antal Fruhmann (1908-1987), a stove master from Győr, left his house and workshop to the city museum in his will. The stove ash museum established here is unique in the country. In Győr, which has a significant heritage, the commemoration of the now-disappeared Mágner, Dachauer, Magyary and Fruhmann workshops, the interior-style exhibition halls presenting the history of the Győr stove industry, make it possible for guests of all ages to immediately experience the “warmth of home” expression.

Borsos Miklós (1906–1990) is a classic master of modern Hungarian sculpture, who, following his early experiments in painting, created lasting works in all genres of plastic art. Several new genre solutions are also associated with his name. In addition to his sculptural activity, his work as a coiner is also very significant, he is considered one of the 20th century innovators of the genre. He drew tirelessly throughout his life. Drawing helped him to understand sculpture, and his art was fulfilled through drawing. He has created unforgettable illustrations for more than a dozen literary works.


CAST DAMAGE – STONE COLLECTION

Since 1957, the castle courtyard and dungeon have housed a permanent exhibition of Roman and early modern stone and brick collections by József Horváth. stand out.

In addition to the life work of Lili Ország and the works of progressive Hungarian artists of the European School (Anna Margit, Dezső Korniss, Endre Bálint, Tihamér Gyarmathy, Ferenc Martyn), the Vasilescu Collection also includes the graphics of Béla Kondor, the sculptures of Tibor Vilt and Erzsébet Schaár, and the works of the generation of artists starting in the 1960s and 1970s. The works of outstanding individuals (Tama Hencze, István Nádler, Ilona Keser, Dóra Maurer, Pál Deim) can be seen. The historical exhibition held in the Esterházy Palace commemorates the community of Győr citizens. The Roman Arrabona flashes as a background, and then the story progresses through the Middle Ages and the Modern Age to the industrial society. The focus of the collection was on those individuals and families for whom the city played a decisive role not only in their lives and careers, but also contributed to the development of the city, serving the community with their activities, knowledge and wealth.

THE WHITE GOLD OF THE EAST – SELECTION FROM THE FAR EASTERN COLLECTION OF B&ACULAR MAGDA

The exhibition for the true curio presents a representative selection from the oriental artefacts collected by the violinist Magda B´csi from Győr over a lifetime. In 2011, the collector offered the Museum of Applied Arts more than two hundred pieces, both exceptional in quality and quantity, mainly oriental ceramics and porcelain salvaged from shipwrecks. These pieces are presented in our collection, together with the artistic and applied works collected since then. The objects present oriental ceramic art with a millennial tradition, from the 10th century to the 19th century. Among other things, the collection includes the exceptionally beautiful porcelain that once enriched the famous collection of Elector Augustus the Strong (1670-1733), King of Poland.
