Pannonhalma, a town of 3,600 inhabitants built during the Benedictine Archdiocese, dates back to Roman times. Our conquering ancestors found Avar, Slavic and Bavarian settlements here, all of whom were familiar with Christianity. The court of Hungarian princes, who had already settled there in the 10th century, stands on the hillside. In 996, missionary Benedictine monks settled on the hilltop, and this later determined the development of the settlement. Initially, it was called "Pannonia" and was home to courtiers, winegrowers and craftsmen, but in the 12th century, it became a larger village and market place under the name "Alsok". By the end of the Middle Ages, it was a populous city. develops, and from then on its name is "Szentm´rton" after the patron saint of the monastery church. At the beginning of the 1500s, the industrialists and merchants' quarter, the Váralja, was built from the walls of the monastery, which was built as a fortress. During the Turkish times, the population sometimes entered, sometimes fled, and finally the city was destroyed. In the 18th century The 19th century is the age of reconstruction: Germans and Slavs live alongside Hungarian residents, and the first signs of farming already appear in the village landscape (e.g. the large buildings that still stand today).

In 1965, the name of the settlement was changed from Győrszentmárton to Pannonhalmá. In the late 1980s, the Hungarian wine-growing society, recognizing the winemaking process taking place here, worked, created the Pannonhalma-Sokoróalja Wine Region, the center of which was Pannonhalma. In addition to the national economic changes, a partial profile change also took place: in addition to high-quality grape production, tourism also became its defining feature.
In 2000, the settlement was granted city status, thus its role as a small town also increased. The city has several restaurants, guesthouses, A campsite awaits its guests. The wonderful oak and holm oak forests of the hills surrounding Pannonhalmá offer unforgettable experiences to cycling and hiking enthusiasts.
