Thrower Square

The heart of Eger can be considered the Baroque-style Dobó István Square, where the narrow streets of the city run from several different directions. It is a popular meeting place and the venue for many artistic and cultural events. In the middle of the square is Dobó István Square. The statue of István stands tall with his drawn saber, on his left is the brave István Mekcsey, who is fearless and looking after the enemy, and on the right is a heroic woman from Eger who is about to throw a stone at the coffin. The coffin lying at the feet of the captain of the castle warrior is decorated with a flag and a chain surrounding the monument, which has been pierced by 8 bullets. symbolizes the victory over the Turkish army of 80,000 soldiers. The Dobó Square is connected to the Kis Dobó Square by a bridge over the Eger Stream. Originally, this was the border between Heves and Borsod counties, where until 1807 taxes had to be paid on the left side of the bridge. in a former customs house, which today functions as a restaurant.
